Legal in Cali answers one question for Californians, visitors and anyone moving here: is this legal in California? We explain California law in plain English, cite the code section behind every answer, and keep each guide dated so you know how current it is.
Why this site exists
California has more law than most states, and much of it is stricter or simply different from what people expect. A tint shop in Nevada, a gun store in Arizona or an employer in Texas can follow rules that are illegal here. Searching for a straight answer usually turns up law firm ads, forum threads or pages that never say which statute they rely on. We built Legal in Cali to give the answer first, then show the law that supports it.
What a guide looks like
- A short answer at the top, starting with yes, no or partly, and naming the code section.
- The details that change the answer, such as age, amount, location, timing and exceptions.
- Penalties, stated as infraction, misdemeanor or felony with the ranges set by California law.
- Real scenarios that show how the rule plays out on a California road, job or apartment.
- A last-verified date and a log of what changed on the page.
What we cover

Who writes the guides
Guides are researched and edited by Marin Kestrel, the editor of Legal in Cali. Each one is built from the California codes, bill text and history from the Legislature, the California Code of Regulations, published court opinions and guidance from state agencies such as the DMV, the Department of Justice and the Labor Commissioner. Our editorial policy sets out the full process.
What we are not
Legal in Cali is an independent publisher, not a law firm. We do not give advice on individual cases, and reading a guide does not create an attorney-client relationship. If you are charged with an offense, facing a deadline or signing something important, talk to a lawyer licensed in California. The State Bar of California certifies lawyer referral services that can connect you with one.
